Who Were Japan’s Most Googled People in 2013?

Say goodbye to anything productive you had planned in the next hour, as Google has released its search statistics for 2013, including the top ten trending names of the year in different regions. Recently deceased Nelson Mandela and Paul Walker topped the global lists but neither of them appeared in Japan’s top ten, which is perhaps unique in its being composed entirely of national celebrities relatively unknown elsewhere.

The top of Japan’s list was also dictated by tragedy, as the most searched-for person in 2013 is Yakkun Sakurazuka, stage name for Yasuo Saito, a voice actor, singer and comedian who died in a car crash on October 5th.

Figure skater Miki Ando is second, partially due to the good ol’-fashioned witch hunt surrounding the fact she gave birth out of wedlock in April. Ando, 25, refused to reveal who the father is and at one stage was forced to…
